Healthy Habits Classes Begin in Bronx and Upper Manhattan Summer Programs
In early July, Laura Cipullo and the Whole Nutrition Services team debuted the summer program of Healthy Habits, an 8-session intensive for children aged 5-13. The sessions take place in 3 summer day camps once a week located in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. The curriculum is designed to promote long-lasting lifestyle changes in children, with useful tools for parents as well. Healthy Habits aims to teach children and their families how to have a positive relationship with eating and a neutral relationship with food. Moreover, it is important for children to understand that eating a particular food will not make a child “good” or “bad,” rather it will give them high-quality energy versus low-quality energy. Each week, nutrition educators use lesson plans to teach hands-on nutrition activities. The activities range from group stretching/movement to mindful eating and nutrition label reading tips. The goals of the program include learning to:
- Eat all types of food
- Incorporate longterm exercises into your daily life
- Ask your family for support
- Have a positive relationship with eating
- Portion management based on your own hunger/fullness scale
Healthy Habits began as a health promotion workbook that is available to order online through Amazon. This tool can be used by coaches, teachers and even one-on-one with children and parents at home.
